Customer Identity and Access Management

Who is Ping Identity?

Ping Identity is a globally leading provider of modern identity and access solutions for enterprises with complex IT landscapes. The company specializes in securing digital identities in distributed, hybrid, and cloud-native architectures. It is headquartered in Denver, Colorado.

In 2023, the strategically important merger with ForgeRock took place, another leading provider of identity and access technologies. This merger created a combined solution provider with one of the most comprehensive portfolios in enterprise identity and access management. The strengths of both platforms – particularly in the areas of CIAM, directory services, consent management, and automation – were combined into a unified product approach.

What IAM Solutions Does the Ping Identity Portfolio Include?

Ping Identity offers a modular platform for identity security that covers a wide range of identity and access management requirements – from secure authentication and access control to customer identity and governance.

  • PingOne Platform – the central identity platform

The PingOne Platform provides the cloud-based foundation for modern identity and access management scenarios. It is modular, scalable, and designed for organizations with high requirements for availability, security, and flexibility.

The platform helps organizations manage identities centrally, unify authentication processes, and securely control access across different applications and systems.

  • Single Sign-On – secure sign-on across all applications

With Single Sign-On, Ping Identity enables seamless sign-on across different applications, portals, and systems. Users can authenticate once and then securely access authorized applications.

Ping Identity supports established standards such as SAML, OpenID Connect, and OAuth2. This simplifies integration into existing enterprise landscapes while reducing complexity for users and IT teams alike.

  • Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) – adaptive and risk-based

Ping Identity offers multi-factor authentication that adapts to context, risk, and user behavior. This allows organizations to apply additional security checks precisely where they are needed – for example, in the case of unusual access, sensitive applications, or an elevated risk profile.
Adaptive MFA helps balance security and usability. Standard access remains efficient, while critical situations are protected by additional authentication factors.

Ping Identity's Access Management components allow fine-grained control over access to web, mobile, and API-based applications. Policies, risk analyses, and context-based decisions enable dynamic access control.

This capability is a key building block for secure digital processes, especially in large organizations with multiple brands, portals, partner networks, or complex application landscapes.

  • Customer Identity & Access Management – CIAM for scalable customer experiences

Ping Identity is particularly strong in Customer Identity & Access Management. It enables organizations to manage millions of customer identities, provide secure registration and login processes, and address data protection requirements such as consent management.

Ping Identity's CIAM solutions help organizations design digital customer experiences that are secure, high-performing, and user-friendly – for example, in e-commerce portals, customer platforms, mobile apps, or digital service channels.

By integrating ForgeRock technologies, Ping Identity has expanded its portfolio with additional capabilities in identity governance and administration. These include identity lifecycle management, role modeling, onboarding processes, recertifications, and governance functions, among others.

This makes it possible to design identity processes that are not only secure but also traceable and compliant.

  • Directory Services – scalable identity data

ForgeRock Directory Services provide high-performance directory services for identity data, session information, and authorization rules. These are particularly well suited to large, transaction-intensive, highly available environments. Directory Services form an important technical foundation, especially in CIAM and enterprise scenarios where performance, availability, and scalability are critical.

When and in Which Scenarios Does it Make Sense to Use Ping Identity?

Ping Identity (including ForgeRock technology) is used wherever digital identities need to be managed securely and with a user-centric approach. Particularly notable is its extensive focus on different identity types such as employees, partners, B2C, and B2B, among others. Ping Identity was one of the first vendors to focus on these use cases and implement them consistently.

This has driven further innovation around SSO and adaptive MFA, regardless of whether access takes place in the office, on mobile, or remotely. Complex access scenarios, e. g., in corporate groups with multiple brands, portals, or partner networks, can be controlled with fine granularity using the Access Management components. This is a key part of fraud prevention.

Ping Identity is particularly valuable when organizations have high requirements for usability, security, scalability, and integration. The platform can be used in both modern cloud-native architectures and hybrid enterprise landscapes. In the area of IGA and Directory Services, customers benefit from a highly available, scalable architecture – ideal for regulated industries with extensive audit obligations or for cloud-first strategies. Ping Identity is also particularly strong in CIAM: user-friendly registration, data protection management (consent), and seamless integration into marketing and sales channels.

In addition, the solutions integrate excellently into existing security and ITSM ecosystems – e. g., through REST APIs, SCIM, OAuth2, SAML, LDAP, and webhooks.

Why is Ping Identity Relevant for Compliance and Regulation?

Organizations in regulated industries must be able to trace at all times who is accessing which systems, applications, and data. Ping Identity helps organizations design access that is controlled, context-based, and audit-proof.

Among other things, the platform helps with:

  • secure authentication
  • enforcement of access policies
  • risk-based access control
  • logging and traceability of access
  • consent management in the customer context
  • identity lifecycle management
  • recertifications and governance processes
  • integration into audit, security, and compliance processes

This helps organizations implement regulatory requirements, for example in connection with DORA, NIS2, ISO/IEC 27001, data protection requirements, or industry-specific security standards.

How Does Ping Identity Differ from Other Vendors?

Ping Identity stands out through its strong focus on modern access management, CIAM, and identity security scenarios. The platform is designed to support different identity types and complex digital access scenarios securely and in a user-friendly way.

Through the merger with ForgeRock, Ping Identity has an especially broad portfolio in enterprise identity security. As a result, organizations benefit from a platform that can comprehensively cover internal identities as well as customer and partner identities.

How is Ping Identity's Licensing Model Structured?

Ping Identity follows a modular licensing model based on the functions used and the usage scenarios. Licensing is typically based on identities, authentications, active users, or functional modules.

Depending on the use case, different models may be relevant – for example, for workforce IAM, Customer Identity & Access Management, or specific access management scenarios. In CIAM projects, volume-based models often play a role, for example based on monthly active users.

The modular structure allows organizations to roll out the solution step by step and adapt it to their individual requirements.

What Deployment Models Does Ping Identity Support?

Ping Identity is primarily offered as a modular cloud platform. However, depending on architecture, security requirements, and existing IT landscape, hybrid scenarios and, in some cases, near-on-premises deployment models are also possible.

This allows organizations to choose a deployment model that fits their cloud strategy, regulatory situation, and technical starting point. This flexibility is especially important for complex enterprise architectures, where it helps connect existing systems, legacy applications, and modern cloud services in a meaningful way.

IPG is an Implementation Partner of Ping Identity

As an experienced integrator, IPG supports the deployment of Ping Identity in demanding environments – from solution architecture through integration to live operation. We combine deep expertise in IAM, CIAM, and IGA with project methodology and security excellence. The ForgeRock components – particularly Directory Services, Identity Gateway, and Identity Cloud – are also part of our implementation portfolio.

Whether Microsoft-centric, cloud-native, hybrid, or legacy-driven: IPG helps organizations integrate Ping Identity securely and sustainably into their IT landscape.

Successful Customer Projects

IPG has successfully implemented Ping Identity predominantly in the regulated financial sector – including banks, insurers, and payment service providers with high requirements for data protection, access security, traceability, and compliance. Our solutions meet the technical and organizational requirements of DORA, ISO/IEC 27001, or NIS2, as well as industry-specific requirements for organizations.

Thanks to role-based access concepts, audit-proof functionality, and fine-grained authentication mechanisms, regulatory requirements can not only be met but also implemented in an operationally efficient way. Our customers benefit from consistent user experiences, increased security across the entire access chain, and automated IAM processes – while reducing operational complexity at the same time.

One concrete example is the project Inventx modernizes multi-factor authentication with Ping (only available in German), in which IPG supported the modernization of an MFA solution in a demanding financial services environment.

At the same time, IPG is open to projects in other sectors such as industry, energy, or healthcare – wherever digital identities need to be managed securely, scalably, and in compliance with regulations.
